Chapters 1 & 2

So far, how do you feel about Nick? What kind of narrator do you think he will be?

AND

We've been introduced to several characters so far; do you find any similarities between the characters from The Great Gatsby and those described in Hemingway's stories?

  2. I do not see very many similarities in this story to the characters in Hemmingways stories because none of them are all really depressed and coping with death and no one has died or trying to kill themselves but they are rich and live in a nice neighborhood and I dont see them facing any hardships yet in this chapter but i may be wrong as I read ahead, but these are my views now. Not many similarities

  3. I feel that Nick will be more of a "story teller" the anything because of the fact that he doesn't really judge others as much as a normal person might. I feel like he might goo more into detail about a persons qualities, traits, and personality. Especially because people feel more comfortable coming up to him and talking about there problems.

  4. I agree with Collin but we are only just starting the book and I feel like the characters might go through a few changes before the book ends and end up more like the characters from hemmingways short stories. The difference here is that Hemmingway had to jump right into the characters problems and weaknesses because of how short his stories were, here we have a few hundred pages of being able to develop and change into new or different mind sets of each individual character.

  5. Nick seems to be living a pretty good life, he came to see his cousin and how she is doing with her wealthy life. It seems he likes to dig deeper in some of the characters thoughts and actions and emotions.

In Hemingway's short story, he doesn't really give any descriptions on some characters because its a short story. The Great Gatsby is a book, so I'm pretty sure there will be more info. and meaning into the characters as we read on. There may be some similarities but i don't really see any yet.

  6. sorry i also forgot to say that I think Nick is a perfect choice to narrarate the novel because of his temperament, it says in chapter one he is tolerant, open-minded, quiet, and a good listener and because of that others talk to him and tell him their secrets. Great great narraratr

  7. I feel good about Nick, he seems to have a lot of good things going for him and i'm looking forward to watching him develop as a narrator.
I don't see many similarities between the characters from The Great Gatsby and the ones from Hemingway's stories except that there seems to be a lot going on which they don't discuss their problems but they hint at them like between Daisy and Tom and the people from Hills Like White Elephants.

  8. Nick seems like a very arrogant rich kid but also has some qualities that could prove otherwise. His narrating seems to be improving. the first few paragraphs were the dumbest thing I've ever read besides my Antonia but seems to be getting better as I read on.

  9. Nick is a very open minded person. He likes to be around his family which tells me that he will be around Daisy a lot through out the rest of the book. I also think that he has a good memory because on page 15 it says "It occurred to me now that I had seen her, or a picture of her, somewhere before." I think that Nick and Jordan have had some history before, or they have met before. I think that Nick is a great narrator because he is open minded.

I agree with Collin about how the Hemmingway characters were depressed and coping with death. Even though we just started this book, I don't think that there will be as much depression and loneliness in this book as the Hemmingway stories.

  10. Nick is right to reserve all judgements of others; that way, Nick can actually see who they present themselves to be.

I agree with Brittany on the subject of Jordan. It feels like Fitzgerald is foreshadowing a show of history between the two. Whether it's good or bad is the question.

Hemingway's characters are hard to decipher because of the scarce amount of description. Fitzgerald is more open with the display of characters and presents the flaws of a person often. Nick is surprisingly exempt from this trait. I feel like he has the ability to reserve the judgements of others, but not himself. In his own narration, he appears flawless.

  11. So far in the story it appears to me that Nick is a person that knows a lot of people and a lot of people open up to Nick. He is a person reserves his judgments. I believe Nick will be a character that will "investigate" other characters and figure out who they are. Some of the characters are similar to those of Hemingway's stories. Nick is sort of uncertain (like Nick from"In Another Country") about what he wants to do with his social life; he knows that he wants to go to the parties that his neighbor throws, but after that Fitzgerald doesn't really give any evidence on what he's going to do then. He is lonely at the party and finds Miss Baker but she is then called to see Jay Gatsby alone. Like Davo said, I think he will be the "story teller"

  12. I think that Nick has a good life, not to rich and not to poor. He does seem to expect some things to be fancier or better than others get. On the other hand he is thankful, and he enjoys life. The only comparison between the characters in The Great Gatsby and other short stories by Hemingway is that there is alcohol and depression.

  13. I agree with Ricky's comment that Nick seems to be the the of person who knows a lot of people and who people feel comfortable opening up to. I feel like with him being "single" it will be easier for him to tell the story because he views and tells us about everyone else's relationships. Nick gets the ability to see into all of the other character's lives by using "people feel comfortable opening up to him." I feel like throughout the story he will be the one learning about the other characters, and informing us on who they are and what their personality is like.

  14. Nick seems like a very non judgmental person. He doesn't look at things narrow minded so he relates well to a lot of people. All the characters we've been introduced to have secrets. They are all having affairs, and cheating and no one seems to care. Its kinda messed up. On the surface they all seem happy, but underneath i think they are all miserable.

    1. Kendra: You feel that on the surface they all seem happy but deep down are miserable--how might this fit with Modernism?

  15. Nick seems like a laid back guy. He doesn't really seem to care that his cousin is getting cheated on. Everyone seems pretty content with the life they are living. Daisy seems upset with Tom when someone calls. She is like pretending to be happy or something. Jordan is mysterious. Everyone is so open about everything, but they still have some secrets we needs to figure out.

  16. I don't really like Nick he is kind of stuck up and prissy. I think Nick is going to be a first person narrator. some similarities i find between the great gatsbys characters and hemmingways characters are that they are all very deep on the inside but they don't show what they are really feeling.

  17. I kind of disagree with IAN. I think he is more of a humble person than what Ian says he is. I think he is going to be a first person narrator though. The characters in Hemingway's stories they are more open characters and Gatsby's characters have more of a inside feeling than outside they bottle things up.

  18. I think that Nick will be a very good narrator because he doesn't seem to be to judgmental of others. He also has lots of friends and we will be able to see into their lifes through nick over hearing their conversations.

  19. I feel that nick is going to be a very excellent narrator. He talks about himself as just a man, and he remains very calm headed. using nick as the narrator allows for us to see the main characters points of view throughout the story. Also i don't see much similarity between the two stories, because they have totally different meanings.

  20. From what ive gathered in reading the novel thus far i believe nick will be detailed in his narration. he is a very observant person, and as far as i can tell an honest and not corrupt person like many of the wealthy residents that live on long island. He also doesnt seem like a very curious person, just a man making his livng. Rather dull.

  21. So far what I have read I feel like nick will be a great narrator giving a lot of detail in his writing, explaining everything well. He seems like a story teller. I have not made any connections to the Hemingway stories, they are nothing alike in my eyes. In Hemingways stories everything seemes depressed and confusing. Some stuff are confusing in this book but as I was saying nothing like Hemingways.

  22. I think that Nick is a very laid back person. he really doesn't have much input in what is going on around him he just goes with the flow. I think that he is a good narrator. he describes things very well but he can also be a little confusing at times in the way that he says things. He is a very detailed and honest narrator he says things how he sees them. He is also very observant and realizes a lot of things that normal people would not see.

  23. I agree with Brittany and Amanda. Nick is a very open minded person and can and will hold back any kind of judgment he could get from those who are trusting him with what ever information he receives or what ever he hears around him. Nick is a very observant type of person and thats why hes good with what ever he chooses to do because he can figure out whats going on and connect things to certain things that he couldn't figure out before. On pg 23 Daisy explains that "Jordan is going to play in a tournament tomorrow at Westchester" and thats how Nick figured out how he recognized Jordan from somewhere because on pg 15 he has seen photos of her in the news paper because she is a Pro Golf Player so that proves that Nick is an observer and remembers things well.

  24. So far, I believe that Nick is a very unbiased, open minded narrator. Like it said at the beginning of the story, he is very conservative when passing judgment on people and this has made for a very interesting description of the characters so far. Fitzgerald and Hemingway both have a unique way of describing their characters, for example Nick does not say that he thinks Tom and Daisy have problems in their marriage but he implies this and lets the reader draw their own conclusions much like Hemingway does.

  25. Once I started reading I noticed Nick was a very open minded and laid back guy. He does not judge anyone and is honest with his opinions. I think he doesn't tell Daisy or Mr.wilson about Tom and Myrtle because he doesn't want conflict with anyone and wants to stay content with everyone. I also feel like he doesn't feel the need in telling them about the cheating because they have an idea and would rather not confront the situation knowing it'll end badly both ways. In chapter 1, page 5, he explains that his father told him "whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had" ; I believe this is what makes him get to know a person before judging based on first impression.

  26. Nick seems to be a really good guy, doesnt judge at a first glance but takes a second to know someone until he forms his oppinion of them. Gatsby never wanted any trouble with anyone because he didnt want it coming to bite him when he met up with Daisy. He couldnt have a simple argument or misunderstanding stand in the way of his love.
