Chapter 8

How are seasons used in constructing the novel?

AND

How does Nick's statement "You're worth the whole bunch put together" show a change in Nick from the beginning of the novel?

  1. I think the seasons are used to construct the novel to explain what kind of dilemma there is cause in this chapter the day they went to New York was the hottest day of the year and that was the day Tom confronted gatsby and everything was all out in the open now, and then the sleepless night passed and the next day autumn was in the air and I guess that symbolizes that gatsby is losing hope for Daisy and that he is coming to terms that he will never have her and realizes that consequences of holding on to that one dream for so long to have her back he even wants to take a dip in the pool even though it is autumn now but refuses to let the past go and it is no longer hot and sunny anymore, it's gone.

As for the quote i believe Nick says that to Gatsby because he realizes now that there is no hope for him and daisy even if gatsby hasn't realized it yet everyone around him does and he feels very bad for him because he's loved her since he had any money or fortune and was the only girl he lied about his past too and actually had to become something and still after all these years managed to stay close to her and now he still can't have her and unlike Tom he actually deserves her and Tom doesn't appreciate her and nicks opinion changes cause even though he disapproves of him he still respects everything hes done to try and get her back.

  2. I agree with Collin. The seasons are used to help set the plot of the story and each symbolize and help out the chapter into motion everythig that happens in the chapter ties together to help set the mood and emotions of everything. Gatsby is losing hope that he might not ever get to have daisy But he still tries to believe that she will come to him at last and he could finally have her. But nick feels bad for gatby because he doesn't think that daisy will really leave Tom for gatsby. And even though Tom is disrespectful towards daisy and doesn't really appreciate her he still loves her and is willing to do anything to try to keep daisy with him he wants to change for her. Nick oppionion changes because he finally realizes that Tom and daisy are suppose to be together even though they do have problems for eachother and gatsby just needs to let go of the past and move on and so nick just has sympathy towards gatsby and the others. He also seems depressed and confused because he just jordans feelings and probably ruined their relationship with eachother but they still have feelings towards eachother it was just a bad time and nick needed to be alone to think things through to figure everything out to make him understand what was happening ever sence he has lived in west egg

  3. I agree with Megan and Collin. On the hottest day of the year everything is frantic and all the secrets are being revealed, kinda like the rising action. When the weather starts getting colder and is turning to autumn everything starts winding down and everyone is just left with reality. I don't think anyone is really happy with how things worked out, but they've all accepted thats how it has to be. And I think Nick says that to gatsby because he knows he is a better person than any of them and he deserves daisy more then anything but he will never get to have her.

  4. I disagree with Collin on the quote. I dont think that Nick says that to him because he feels sorry for him. I think it shows how finally his attitude towards Gatsby has changed. Throughout the story Nick is constantly skeptical and almost dissaproving of Gatsby. So this quote represents the distance he has come from beginning to end. He finally understands Gatsby and realizes how good of a person he is. As for the seasons, I agree with Kendra, Megan and Collin. Heat tends to make people uncomfortable so ofcourse things would explode on the hottest day of the year. Then after gatsby is dead and the winter comes Nick thinks its to depressing to stay. The Winter sometimes has that effect on people.

  5. The seasons definitely have an affect on the novel. Since it was the hottest day of the year, all the secrets are boiling over, and getting revealed. Tom and Gatsby get into a little tiff about if Daisy loves just Gatsby, she seems a little confused that Gatsby is just assuming all this stuff about her. Everyone seems to be getting upset about how the whole thing is getting played out.

  6. I believe that the seasons play a major role in this book. The reason i think this is because on the hottest and longest day of summer Tom confronts Gatsby about daisy, Fitzgerald uses the heat of summer to fuel Toms rage towards Gatsby using symbolism. After a while summer begins to end and Gatsby realizes that Daisy isn't going to leave Tom causing Gatsby to feel depressed and broken. So i agree with Megan and Collin because the heat of summer can fuel anger in most people including Tom.

In the begining of the novel Nick is curious about Gatsby yet he dislikes him for his assertiveness and pride, but by the end of the novel he realizes that Gatsby worked hard to get to the position he was in, and he gains respect for Gatsby.

  7. I think that the seasons do play a big part in this book. On the hot summer day Tom is mad at Gatsby and is begining to find out that Daisy likes Gatsby too. The seasons are great symbolism. Heat is associated with anger so when Gatsby and Tom are fighting. Then its a cold winter day Gatsby is killed. the cold representing the sadness.

    1. I agree with hannah about the whole thing with the seasons and or weather plays a big role in symbolizing the plot. The weather when it was hot the plot/setting became almost awkward but when it was rainy it was sad and depressing.

  8. I believe the seasons play a key role in this novel. Because not only are the seasons changing as time goes on, but also the mood, theme, and the whole perspective one might think of this novel. Gatsby gets confronted by Tom about Daisy. On a nice warm summer day. Gatsby just so happenes to pass away during a cold winter day. Which to me represents not only inevitable loniness but also sadness.

  9. I agree with Cody on the quote. Fitzgerald described in the beginning that Gatsby was everything Nick despised. I believe that changed after getting to know him. When Nick first met Gatsby, he was distrusting and a little disappointed at how 'ordinary' he was. When he discovered more about him, he was still a little skeptical from the rumors that were far off from the truth. Nick realized Gatsby was not the man who people say he is.

    1. Why do you agree with Cody? Explain...?

    2. He states that Nick's attitude towards Gatsby changes from the beginning. They became good friends from distrusting strangers; one admiring and one pursuing.

  10. The seasons do play a big part in conducting and producing the plot in the novel. As the seasons change, so does the mood and emotions of the characters. I agree on cody's comment. The season can affect the characters in the novel.
In the quote, it seems like nick may be showing his emotions or his thought because he may be a little more comfortable. In the beginning of the novel, he it seems he is more to himself.

    1. I agree with Erwin that seasons play a big part in the plot of the novel. The heat on the hottest day of the year is symbolizing the climax of the story, the turning point with so much tension between the characters. And the cold of winter when Gatsby dies, it is cold, wet and depressing.

  11. The quote shows that Nick is opening up more he is showing his feelings and emotions. I do not remember who he said these words to but he is showing them more emotion than he did in the beginning of the book.

  12. i think that seasons are used to describe what kind of feelings or actions in the story will happen in the summer there is a lot of fun and joy. Ian agrees with erwin and so do i the hottest day of the year for sure shares our climax to the story and the day full of rain and and cold of winter Gatsby keels over and dies could be a twist to change this story and give it a modernism kind of feel with an unhappy ending. and nick he has changed at that point of those words you could get an idea that he's developed a sort of personality now at first all he seemed like was just a narrator but he started to become one of the characters in the story so he's a lot different from the begging in that he's finally not just some dude telling the story.

  13. I agree with Collin, that the hottest day if the year in Summer symbolizes the climax of the story, and that the next day, Autumn, represents that Gatsby has no hope of being with Daisy.

For the quote I agree Cody on the quote, it shows how Nicks attitude has changed toward Gatsby and that he went from sceptical and disapproving to finally come to respect Gatsby and think more of him.

  14. I agree with Caleb. Fitzgerald uses the seasons to show the different phases of the story. The climax was during the hottest day of summer and the falling action took place during the first days of autumn. After their confrontation in New York, Gatsby knew that he wouldn't ever be able to have Daisy and that she was lost forever and it was this morning that he made the comment that it finally felt like autumn and that the leaves would falls soon.

I also believe the quote shows how Nicks attitude has changed toward Gatsby. At the beginning of the story he was very apprehensive towards Gatsby, and was was very unsure what to think of him but at this point he realizes that Gatsby was better then anyone else in the Eggs and respects him greatly for it.

  15. I agree with Collin, I believe the hottest day represented the rising action. It led everyone to share their secrets and spill their lies about what has been happening behind their backs. Towards the autumn, the air cools down and it makes it seem he's slowly fading away from Daisy and doesn't know what to do about it but accept it. This is when he made the comment about how it finally felt like autumn.

I think the quote shows Nicks feelings towards Gatsby. At first, Nick wasn't sure what to think of him and didn't see him being very trustworthy and truthful but as the story goes on Gatsby tells him everything about his past and his feelings towards everything which shows Nick how honest he really is and now respects him.

  16. I think the seasons show a change in the plot. For instance, Tom and Gatsby had their conflict on the hottest day of the summer and that shows the rising action. everything that happened before was building up to that point. When Gatsby encounters Wilson, its the first day of Autumn; and that is the falling action.

In the beginning of the novel, Nick was a little unsure of what to think of Gatsby. But after learning about his past, and the things Gatsby has gone through; Nick realized he was one of the better people in the world. And by saying "Your worth the whole bunch put together" Nick obviously respects and thinks highly of Gatsby.

  17. I believe the seasons play a big part in the book, because on the hottest day of summer, all the rage comes out. Tom confronts Gatsby about daisy, and fitzgerald uses the heat of the summer to make Tom feel more enraged, to set the rising action. When winter hits, Gatsby feels depressed because he knows he is stuck without Daisy and that she doesnt want to leave Tom.
I believe the quote represents how nick feels about Gatsby, he couldnt believe what he was saying, and his stories were always better than yours, but that changed. Gatsby showed Nick his expressions and feelings towards past. Nick finally realizes Gatsbys a trustable man who tells the truth, and Nick earns repect for him.

  18. I believe that Fitzgerald did a good job incorporating seasons into this book. The seasons are sort of symbolic to the plot of the story. As time moves on from the beginning of the book and the year Nick starts to open up(like flowers do in spring) and get involved more with Gatsby and everyone else. During the summer as it got hotter things started heating up between Gatsby and Tom. On page 161 one of the new servants said, "I'm going to drain the pool today, Mr. Gatsby. Leaves'll start falling pretty soon" this shows that Fall is coming and plants start dying or hibernating and later Gatsby dies that day.

Nicks statement does show a change in Nick since the beginning of the novel. in the opening page of the book Nick says, "Im inclined to reserve all judgements" and in this chapter he openly judges Gatsby by telling him, "You're worth the whole bunch put together." This is a change in Nick since the beginning of the novel

  19. I believe that the season play a big role in the story, especially emotion. When it is hot out and it's summer things seem to "heat up" if you will. Gays by and Daisy get a thing going on again, theirs conflict between Tom and Gatsby, and Nick and Jordan and liking each other even more. When winter comes everything seems to die. Nick and Jordan's relationship is terminated, Daisy picks Tom so there is no more Gatsby in her life, Mertyle dies, and most importantly Gatsby dies along with Wilson
