Chapter 7

What effect does the temperature have on the plot in Chapter 7?

Daisy says, "But it's so hot [...] and everything's so confused" (125).

AND

Did you notice the use of the color pink? Pink and gold were used numerous times in "Winter Dreams" and throughout The Great Gatsby Fitzgerald incorporates colors too. Why pink? He describes Gatsby wearing a pink suit, Daisy wanting to put Gatsby in a pink cloud and push him around in it--why pink? Is the color symbolic? If so--how?

  1. The quote mentioned above "But it's so hot [...] and everything's so confused" (125) shows how the temperature does effect the plot. This happens while Gatsby, Nick, Tom, Jordan, and Daisy are sitting in Tom and Daisy's living room and talking. It is awkward because Gatsby likes Daisy and she doesn't know who she likes more and Tom doesn't know yet until Daisy gives it away by saying "'You look so cool'" (125). It was awkward before this because Daisy hadn't decided who she liked yet but they were both there and there was a tension in the room and she was confused. During this Nick and Jordan knew what was going on but weren't involved as much.

    1. I agree with tots because I believe that the heat represents things "heating up". And from this heating up Daisy gets confused between her husband and her old love. Things are also heated up because these two are in the same room and its kind of awkward

  2. I also think that the temperature will continue to have an effect on the plot.

  3. I do think that the temperature is affecting the plot because when someone gets really hot and uncomfortable from heat, they start to do some things that they wish they wouldn't do and start to get confused with things when they get to hot and uncomfortable from the heat. I don't think that Pink is a symbol for anything. I can't think of anything that would represent what pink could mean.

    1. I agree with what Brittany said about the heat can make people uncomfortable and if to hot for to long they could possibly get heat stroke. That could be what was happening to Daisy.

    2. Could pink have anything to do with the heat, or is it just there for Gatsby's love for Daisy?

    3. I don't think that pink has anything to do with the heat. I think it has to do with Gatsby's love for Daisy. I think this because pink shows up more in the story than just when it is hot and pink usually symbolizes love more than heat.

  4. I agree with Taylor that the heat represents like the love triangle between daisy Tom and gatsby and as Tom is getting closer and closer to the confrontation everyone is getting hot and the temperature is rising

Sometimes Gatsby comes up with the color pink. "the luminosity of his pink suit under the moon" (Gatsby, p.136). When Gatsby and Daisy are finally together, "there was a pink and golden billow of foamy clouds above the sea" (p. 91). I think pink symbolizes Daisy and Gatsbys love for eachother and Gatsbys hope to get closer and closer to her as the story progresses

  5. I agree with Collin with the part with the pink it does symbolize their love and how they think of each other. Its more flighty thoughts also. I think the heat is Tom putting two and two together and Daisy knows she has to choose between the two and she doesn't know which is the better choice. Why does this seem like the heat is all the tension and anger in the room.

  6. I agree with Brittany related to the weather patterns. Extreme heat causes a discomfort for the characters in this story. With that discomfort, they seem to get a little "rotten." They say and do things that they normally wouldn't (or would less rudely) do. I also have a feeling the heat has an increased affect on Tom, like his world is melting around him. (Not to mention his 'hot' temper.)

The color pink is often associated with love. I believe Fitzgerald organized Gatsby to be in a pink suit for hope and change. Gatsby chose to wear a pink suit on a day he was going to Daisy's house, regardless of how hot the day was. I believe he wanted Daisy to know the color pink was just for her and to show her his love in a concealed way. Daisy must have picked up the hint in order to mention pink clouds. But, so did Tom.

    1. Amanda, I agree with you about how the color pink is a symbol for love and that is why Daisy and Gatsby are talking about and wearing pink. But did Tom REALLY catch on to it right away? even though it was right in his face, like somebody smacked him upside the head with it, it took him a while to notice.

  7. I agree with Amanda. The temperature effects the plot And characters greatly the temperature makes everyone uncomfortable and makes everyone not think right and to say things they might have not have said if in better conditions. Daisy is melting down she does stupid things and makes a fool of herself infront of Jordan and nick by kissing gatsby when Tom left the room to get cool drinks for everyone. Toms whole world is melting around him his wife is being foolish and stupid and he finds out that mrs Wilson is moving away and then daisy tells him that she never loved Tom and that she has always loved gatsby and then she hits mrs Wilson and kills her and Tom knows what car hit him absurd blaming gatsby for everything he is and has lost he lost mrs Wilson whom he has been in an affair with for quite some time and he's losig daisy but not that easy he is going to fight for his wife because he's not going to lose another person he loves to someone he doesn't even know. And pink ibthink is symbolizing love the love gatsby has towards daisy and the love that daisy has for both Tom and gatsby and it could also symbolize confusion everyone is confused due to the heat and everything that is happening so fast and unexpected.

  8. I think the above quote does show how the heat is symbolic to the plot. It is very hot outside and they are starting to get delirious, and like brittani said starting to do things they wouldnt normally do. Its very awkward to have Daisy, Gatsby, and Tom all in the same room because everyone knows about the affair except tom. When daisy makes the comment "your so cool" he finally figures is out. He is outraged and his "hot" temper goes wild. I think it is appropriate to say his world is melting down around him when he finds out mrs wilson is moving. Also i see that fitgerald uses the color pink a lot, but im not sure what it is symbolic of?

  9. The temp does in fact have an affect on the way the characters are acting. Daisy seems more dramatic when it was hot out. I do see that Fitzgerald uses pink a lot... not sure why. It could be like Collin said, symbolic of their love and passion for each other. I googled what the color pink could be symbolic of:

"Pink is the color of universal love. Pink is a quiet color. Lovers of beauty favor pink. A pink carnation means "I will never forget you".

    Pink Energy
Pink is a combination of red and white. The quality of energy in pink is determined by how much red is present. White is the potential for fullness, while red helps you to achieve that potential. Pink combines these energies. Shades of deep pink, such as magenta, are effective in neutralizing disorder and violence. Some prisons use limited deep pink tones to diffuse aggressive behaviour.

Pink provides feelings of caring, tenderness, self-worth and love, acceptance. "

  10. I agree with Kendra and Brittani. The idea that the heat in this chapter symbolizes how uncomfortable everyone is in there situation. As the chapter progresses everythings seems to be getting worse. The tension between Tom and Gatsby, the relationship of Daisy and Gatsby, and even the relationship of Jordan and Nick.

  11. I also agree with Collin, because when Tom, Gatsby and Daisy were together in this chapter, the Pink symoblized the hope and love that was shared between Gatsby and Daisy. When Gatsby and daisy were alone the mood was more calm and nice, but when Tom was with them the mood was more grim and depressing. So the pink represents that calmness and love between Gatsby and daisy and the golden represents a more grim and depressing time.

    1. I agree with William's comment that pink symbolizes the hope and love shared between Gatsby and Daisy. When ever Tom was with Gatsby and Daisy the mood seemed to be depressing, but whenever Tom left Gatsby and Daisy seemed really happy. About the temperature I believe that heat symbolizes confusion and stress Daisy feels between her and Tom and her and Gatsby.

  12. I think that the temperature does effect the plot. Like it gets hot when people are uncomfortable or put in an awkward situation. Like in the love triangle between Tom, Gatsby, and Daisy. Its a really hot day when Tome and Gatsby are arguing about daisy and Nick and Jordan are kinda just in the middle of it then when everything kinda cools down so does the temperature.

  13. To be completeley honest I failed to recognize the pink & gold that was mentioned numerous times. But I think it was to show the love Gatsby feels about Daisy. The mood would be turned completely upside down if Daisy was like I want to put Gatsby in a black cloud and push him around in it.

  14. The color pink being used in The Great Gatsby in chapter 7 I believe was used to symbolized confusion with Daisy from all the heat. That is the only reason i can think that Fitzgerald would use Pink as a symbol for.

  15. I think "pink" in the story represents emotions between Gatsby and Daisy. As tom gets closer to finding out their in love, they become nervous and sweaty, and thats what the colour gold represents, the down times... Daisy likes Gatsby in the pink because it shows their love, and the warm feeling it brings to them.

  16. It is like the weather question in chapter 5. The weather is like connected in the situation the the group is in. As tension rises, so does the heat. As Tom gets more and more anxious to figure out who Gatsby really is and why he is so fond of Daisy. The more anxious he gets, the bitter it gets.

  17. I believe that the temperature in chapter 7 does have an effect on the plot because things are getting worse between the three lovebirds(Tom, Gatsby, Daisy). Things intensify as time progresses as does the heat. Things are specifically are heating up between Gatsby and Tom. As Amanda sad Tom has a "hot" temper.

The color pink is becoming more and more suggested as the story moves on and it's becoming significant as well. As everyone else is saying pink symbolizes the love between Gatsby and Daisy. And for Daisy wanting to push Gatsby in a pink cloud, I see that as a foreshadow. The clouds are high above everyone and out of there reach, and since Daisy mentioned a cloud with Gatsby, I see that as there love for each other is "out of reach."

  18. I think that the temperature effects the plot in the way that it effects the characters themselves. The heat makes people uncomfortable and flustered, causing them to behave in ways that they usually would not.

I agree with Ricky, that the color pink symbolizes the live between Gatsby and Daisy and the pink cloud being out of reach, so the love between Gatsby and Daisy being out if reach.

  19. the temperature in the story could symbol a tense feeling between the character since heat usually brings discomfort and could also be a source of anger like caleb said and the color pink could take place of the color red for the symbol of love but if so then i feel that pink is kind of a young color and that it could be displaying a young childish love.

  20. I believe the temperature symbolizes the rising tension between Gatsby, Tom, and Daisy. Throughout the day they described the temperatures as being unbearable and when it was described as being the hottest part of the day when they were in New York, Gatsby and Tom finally revealed their feelings for each other and both men draw Daisy into their conflict.

I think the color pink such as Gatsby's suit and the pink cloud symbolize what Daisy cant have. She knows that she loves Tom and she wont leave him because of it, but she still wishes that she had waited for Gatsby.

  21. "But it's so hot [...] and everything's so confused" (125). I feel the hot temperature represents Daisy's uncomfortableness between Tom and Gatsby because she is still unsure of who she loves more and she feels awkward with them both being there at once. Tom has no idea until the heat makes her say honest things infront of Tom which is when he starts to catch on.

To me, the color pink represents their love and how much they truly love eachother but can't be together because she can't choose between him and Tom.

  22. i agre with isaac that the temperature represents the rising tensions between the three. i also think that the temperature created a flustered feeling between Daisy and her two lovers; which ultimately left her unable to think clearly or make logical decisions.

I believe that the color pink represented the feelings that Daisy and Gatsby had for one another. Like Stacey said, Pink is the universal color of love.
