Chapter 5

In what ways does the weather effect the plot of Chapter 5.

AND

What is the significance of the "green light" Gatsby mentions in Chapter 5.

  1. The Green light shows Gatsby where Daisy lives and symbolizes his hope that he will see here again soon. It shows this because when he says "you always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock" (pg. 98). This shows how much he likes her and thinks about her often. the section at the begining of the book that talks about him looking across the water at the green light also shows this.

  2. Both Gatsby and Daisy were severely uncomfortable talking to each other. As it rained, it got more and more awkward for the both of them to engage in conversation. When Nick mentions the weather clearing up, Gatsby looks out the window and they both get less awkward. When Nick comes back in, they are socializing like best friends.

I agree with Taylor on the green light. I feel like our understanding of Gatsby's sudden appearance in the beginning of the book is foreshadowing that there will be more understanding of what is confusing now, later in the book. Why was the dock's light green? Was it just a normal thing? I believe the color represents Gatsby's misconception that Daisy would fall in love with him as soon as she saw how wealthy he was; the color green is seemingly portrayed as power and riches, if you will.

    1. I agree with Amanda that the weather symbolizes the awkwardness between Daisy and Gatsby. As the rain poured down Gatsby and Daisy were embarassed and shy, as though they thought it was awkward talking to each other because they hadn't talked in 5 years. When the weather does clear up, Nick finds them in the living room talking and socializing, and the sort of awkwardness goes away.

  3. The green light that we were all wondering about at the end of chapter one is a reminder of how close Gatsby is to Daisy. Because they loved each other back in the war, but when Gatsby went off to war she married Tom. She drank herself numb the night before their wedding. He reaches toward the light because it shows what he wants, it also, to me, symbolizes the American Dream because it's his longing to want to achieve his dream to be with Daisy.

  4. I also agree with Taylor, but i feel like the green light is a symbol for feelings. For example, I feel like when Gatsby says "You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock" (98) I feel like hes really saying that whenever Gatsby sees the green light at night, the feelings he has for Daisy will always come back and he will remember them.

I agree with Amanda about the weather because once the weather started to clear up, Daisy and Gatsby got more comfortable talking to each other. But when it was raining, they both could hardly think of something to say to one another.

    1. Is the time of day (night) also symbolic?

      Delete
    2. Nick mentions how the night "was the hour of profound human change and excitement that was generating on the air." (pg. 101) It is symbolic because of the change people go through as night time (the time for parties) came around. People were awake and energetic around this time, merely to dance and have a good time.

    3. I do think that night is a symbol for memories. A lot of people think of their past at night, like right before they sleep. So I think Gatsby always looks at the green light right before he sleeps so he can remind himself of his fascination of Daisy.

    4. I agree with Brittany's statement that night is symbolic for memories. When people go to sleep they usually lay there and think about things, and for Gatsby, looking at that green light at night before he goes to sleep reminds him of Daisy, and all the times they had together. Looking at that light makes Gatsby remember Daisy and all of their memories.

  5. I agree with Amanda on the weather idea. When the two of them finally meet there feelings seem all messed up and confused, but after the weather changes they both find love in each others eyes. Stacey also has a valid point on the green light, it obviously symbolizes Daisy, or his love for Daisy. He has waited all this time to be with the one girl he wants and now she is just across the lake and all he can do is keep dreaming of the day when they get the chance to have one another.

  6. The weather shows the mood in the story like when it is raining things are obscure and on (page 94)they seem to know each other and Nick says the rain has stopped, but also Gatsby feels no longer nervous and seems like a new man when it has stopped raining, but then again it starts raining again and he gets the old symptoms and starts acting nervous again. He says the green light was more of a reminder of knowing that Daisy was over there and he always wanted to be there instead of being were he was which still not far away. I believe that the night is time of reform so kind of like what Amanda said

  7. I agree with Amanda on how when it was raining the communication between Gatsby and Daisy would become more and more awkward. When Fitzgerald mentions the "green light" i believe that it is symbolizing happiness and or light at the end of the tunnel or in this case a dock. Gatsby still kind of loves or likes Daisy "Possible it has occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light has now vanished forever. Compared to the great distance that had separated him from daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her. It had seemed as close as a star the the moon" (98) He still lives Daisy and the green light might be like Gatsby's heart and the dock is like daisy.

  8. Well the weather in chapter 5 starts out as raining and then says he read it should clear up by around 4 (89) and it is only raining when Gatsby is nervous about seeing daisy and when she first gets there and things get all awkward but after nick leaves them alone or a half hour he comes back and Gatsby is glowing and daisy has tears of joy (94) and after all that they look outside and the rain has stopped cause they are happy again.
The green light is probably one of the most important symbols Green is the color of hope and it first appears when Gatsby stares across the bay towards a green light at the end of a dock (21) Later you find out that this green light is on Daisy's dock. The green light represents Gatsby’s hope to meet Daisy again and a chance to win her back.

    1. I agree with Collin's statement about the green light being very important. In the beginning of the book Nick finds Gatsby staring off at the green light, and we never really learned the meaning of this until chapter 5 when we find out that it was at Daisy dock that this green light belonged. And then in chapter 4 we find out that Daisy and Gatsby used to have a thing back in the day before Gatsby went to war. I believe this green light, as Collin said, represents the hope to meet Daisy again and try to make up for lost time.

  9. The weather has a huge effect on portraying how the characters (Gatsby and Daisy) are feeling towards each other, Bothe Gatsby and Daisy are little hesitant and are not doing well together they are embarrassed to be with each other. but later on in the chapter when the rain stops Gatsby starts of by saying "Oh, hello, old sport" and in the next sentence Nick says "It's stopped raining." (94) you can tell that the mood has lightened between Gatsby and Daisy. Gatsby is not having a closed mind when the weather lightens up and isn't freaking out.

The significance of the Green light at the end of this dock that Gatsby is looking at is that that is Daisy's dock. Gatsby loves Daisy and that is why he is looking at the light.

    2. If Gatsby loves her, why do you think he doesn't just go over to her house often or call her just to talk?

      Delete
    3. he won't go over there. We read how he reacted when they saw Tom at the place they went to eat. Plus Tom doesn't know how he feels. that would be awkward for GAtsby..

      Delete
    4. Could Gatsby be scared to go over, not because of Tom, but because of how long it's been?

      Delete
    5. I think Gatsby doesn't wanna go over to Daisy's and Tom's house because he would feel it would be sort of awkward because he doesn't know how Daisy feels about him. Like if she hates him for leaving her for example. I feel like Gatsby felt more comfortable with Nick and that is why he asked Nick to invite her over to his house.

  10. I also agree with Ian because the weather in chapter five symbolizes the way Gatsby and Daisy are feeling about each other. When the rain is at it's worst at the start of the chapter, Daisy and Gatsby are very shy and afraid to talk to each other, so the rain in the start symbolizes the awkwardness and depression between Daisy and Gatsby. Then at the end of the chapter the sun begins to shine, which i believe symbolizes that they are starting to become more comfortable around each other.

The significance of the green light at the end of Daisy's dock symbolizes a promise to Gatsby. Gatsby and daisy live across a bay from each other, and Gatsby believes that as long as that green light shines, Gatsby and Daisy still have a chance together.

  11. The weather seems to represent some sort of barrier between Gatsby and Daisy that makes them both feel very uncomfortable around each other. As the weather clears and Nick decides to come back into the house everything was almost as if they had known each other forever. Things got so comfortable and enjoyable that the were completely ignorant of Nicks arrival back onto the house even though he tried to make it well known. Then again later when the rain started up again it seemed as if Nick started to get uncomfortable.

  12. I think not only that the green light is representing how close Gatsby is to Daisy, and Daisy to him but I think it more importantly represents the lack of happiness/money and how they can almost go hand and hand. Gatsby assumed that Daisy would fall in love with him the moment she say all the wealth that he did, but it didn't work out that way at all although she may actually love him, it's just not that money she cares about. Also the lack of happiness because it's the only place that Gatsby wants to be, and that would be to be with her. The only problem is he cant do that. Also it's the place that Daisy has been "imprisoned" by marriage, the only place she doesn't want to be.

  13. I agree with what pretty much everyone is saying. The green light is showing how close Daisy and Gatsby are. that they are just within reach of each other. then the weather is showing what they are feeling about each other. Like when they are about to meet and Gatsby was all nervous it was really rainy outside but when they started to warm up to each other the weather warmed up a little.

  14. The stormy weather is symbolizing the awkwardness and tension of Gatsby and Daisys meeting. It is stormy and rainy when they first meet and then the weather starts to clear up as they start getting more comfortable. The significance of the green light is how gatsby watches the light every night and longs for daisy. It also shows his patience and how close they were, and how he they can still love each other after so much time.

  15. The weather is symbolic in this story. Usually when it rains something sad happens in a story, but in this case Gatsby is about to meet Daisy again after years of not talking to her. It is very significant to them. And the rain is just another way that Fitzgerald has made this event more intense.

The "green light" is a great symbol for this story and fits well. The green light obviously represents Daisy, and Gatsby is always looking at the light which ties into him always wanting her. Some more symbols that goes with the "green light" is the body of water between Gatsby and light which in effect shows the distance between Gatsby and Daisy at the time. In literature and film green represents jealousy. What I perceive this as is that Gatsby is jealous of Tom because he is Daisy's lover.

  16. I agree with Amanda and Brooke and Taylor. I believe that the weather symbolizes the feelings and emotions that gatsby and daisy are feeling towards each other and about how they felt in the past the rain symbolizes gatsby and daisy being shy and scared With what eachother has to say towards one another and how they feel about eachother. And when nick says that the weather is clearing up their additude brightens as well they both start to feel comfortable with eachother and star re-kindleing their feelings towards eachother and start catching up and enjoying eachothers company again. The beginning of the book foreshadowed gatsbys mystery as he's looking out across the bay it's showing he's looking for and longing for the past he want to try to get back what he lost 5 years ago. And nick is the middle man he's how gatsby and daisy Meet up with eachother again and regain their feelings towards eachother

  17. I agree with Megan, pretty and smart who would've known? just jokin' it's a cute little ordeal between Gatsby and Daisy. There like two awkward ducks that can't seem to catch the bread that people through out in the lakes. I think the rain brings out the "what if feelings" or the "Suicidal thoughts that seem to follow people in a pickle." "The Green Light" is a grade A symbol. It just hits Gatsby like a flash flood if you will. Every single night. He should've kicked it notebook style and picked her up in a rowboat and paddled into the lake that once separated them and express his undenying love for her in the rain.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I agree with Megan in the way that the rain represents how their emotions are all mixed up and unsure. And then when Nick mentions that the weather had cleared up, and just like that all the confusion and uncertainty cleared up also. I agree with Ricky, that the green light represents Daisy, and that he was looking across the bay longingly at something he has wanted for so long.

  19. I agree on everyone who said that as the weather goes bad and as it gets rainier and rainier, the more awkward and uncomfortable Gatsby and Daisy are when they are next to each other. They wouldn't know how to feel or say something about each other, just utter shyness between them.. After they part from each other, the weather starts getting better.

The "green light" can symbolize as a signal to Daisy that Gatsby is still there, waiting. Daisy lives across a body of water from Gatsby. Gatsby would watch across curiously some nights like when Nick first saw Gatsby.

  20. The rain and bad whether represents how gatsby and daisy feel about each other, as they get closer, the rain and wind starts to pick up, and it feels kind of awkward between them and shy because its been so long. When they slide to each ends of the couch away from each other, the sun comes out and so do their feelings and comfortableness. Gatsby says theres always a green light burning all day and night at the end of the dock of daises house, and i think that represents how Gatsby feels about Daisy, and how she should feel safe and comfortable with him watching over her and knowing where she's at.

  21. I think the rain represents thier emotions, When they get close the wind and rain get stronger. They didnt know what to say to eachother it was an awkward moment, and when they start talking more and know what to say the weather starts to clear up.

I think the "green light" represents hope. Daisy lives across the bay from Gatsby and when he sees the light it reminds him of Daisy.

  22. The weather shares a message about chapter five showing that it is a real emotional part of the book with gatsby and daisy meeting for the first time in almost five years. its a pretty crazy time for gatsby and daisy in the story at this time.

The green light represents daisy and the water in between them represents the years apart they have spent away from each other or how far apart they are now that daisy has married another and gatsby just represents himself of course.

  23. The rain in chapter 5 parallels Daisy and Gatsby's emotions. As it was raining at Nicks house, their conversations were awkward, Nick even told Gatsby that he was embarrassing Daisy by not talking to her. As the afternoon continues, they both warm up to each other and similarly, the weather begins to clear up.

The green light is worshiped by Gatsby as what he doesnt have. Many would guess that Gatsby could have anything he wants or anyone but the green light symbolizes Daisy and as we found out, his money was not enough to bring him happiness or Daisy.

    ReplyDelete
  24. While the weather was anything but calm; their conversation was everything but comfortable. As the weather changed, so did their feelings of talking and they became more open to one another again.
I believe the green light represents Gatsby's undying love for Daisy and his dream of them being together once again. It symbolizes how far he must go and the goals he must accomplish to be reunited with her.

  25. The weather symbolizes Gatsby's feelings towards seeing Daisy. Before she came over, it was raining and gloomy but once they were around eachother the weather cleared up and the sun was shining.

The "green light" represents the distance between him and Daisy and he's only hoping to be with her once again. The green light may also represent that him seeing it still blink, means that she is still there and he may be trying to figure out what he has to do to get to that side and reach the green light to get to Daisy.
