Chapter 9

Who attended Gatsby's final event? How and why is this significant?

AND

How was Jay Gatz's childhood schedule consistent with the adult Gatsby's behavior? Is Fitzgerald voicing a theme?

  1. Henery Gatz, the postman, four or five servants, Owl eyes, and Nick. This is important because Henery Gatz is Mr. Gatsby's father and Nick gets to learn more about Gatsby's past and his personality. "'Why, my God! they used to go there by the hundereds'" (183). The owl man says this and it describes how all of those people that were supposedly Gatsby's friends weren't because they didn't show up to his funeral and pay their respects. They were an example of bought friends or friends that were only Gatsby's friends for his money and fame.

  2. I agree with taylor. Henry gatz, some servants Owl eyes and nick all attend his funeral. This is important because nick does finally get to understand more about gatsby and get to learn about his past and why he became how he ended up As the mystery that everyone wanted to know more about and the truth. All the people that seemed like gatsbys friends were really not his friends they just used him for his money and his parties. So it's sad because he dies with no hope and little to no real friends.

  3. Gatsby's father Henry Gatz, A few of his loyal servants, and Owl eyes, the man that was so fascinated by his library while he was intoxicated. This chapter was especially saddening, as the story went along i came to admire Gatsby and his party throwing. Its sad to think that all those people that enoyed his home and his fun were so shallow that they couldnt even make it to his funeral. Fitzgerald again voices the reoccuring them of Humanity and its selfishness. When Henry shows Nick that book that reveals Gatsby's childhood schedule you see how driven he was to get what he wanted and succeed. Now that he is an adult and he has worked all his life to get where he is, only too lose his love (Daisy) and his life.

  4. Gatsby's father attends his last event. Nick finds out a lot about Gatsby thru him. Not many people showed up, even though there were a lot of people always at his parties. It shows how much people didn't really care about him. They knew that he had some sketchy business on the side. They just wanted to party. They like him because he was rich.

Having his father show up makes everything so much clearer about why Gatsby turned into what he was. And how it all happened. Which puts things in perspective for Nick.

  5. Gatsby's father Henry Gatz, loyal servants, owe-eyed man, and nick attend Gatsby's funeral. It amazed me that of all the people that went to all of Gatsby's Party's only the owl-eyed man showed up. The amount of people that showed up tells us that Gatsby never really had any true friends that cared about him instead of his party's. how Gatsby acts in the present tells us that he used to be a poor kid who always wanted all he could get, his desires when he was younger were to have money and power, so he made it his dream to suceed and get what he wished for.

  6. I agree with Taylor that they were all bought friends, none of the people at his parties ever really knew him but I was glad to know that go father shower up and he really cared for his son and that Nick was really his only true friend that Meyer Wolfshiem guy who claimed to have made him and started him out in life would not even show up he said once a man is dead he is done with them so he didn't really care about gatsby, just the money he made with him, and Klipspringer the boarder that LIVED with him didn't even care or have any wonders about his death, he just wanted his shoes back. This shows that all that time chasing Daisy was a waste of his life and no one was really there for him in the end.

I think the schedule as a child represents that even before he met Dan Cody that he was always driven to succeed and become something in life no matter how he did it he was going to be successful, except then it was all to please himself and his parents but as an adult it was all for Daisy.

  7. Not very many attend his funeral but his father owl eyes nick and some servants. I agree with Taylor that all of Gatsbys "friends" were bought. They only came around for his partys and money. once he had nothing else to offer no one was interested in having anything to do with him. They all avoided his funeral.

  8. I agree with Taylor. Money can get you an extravigant household, nice plush car, and suits galore. Nevertheless it can't bring you inner happiness. As you could see Nick was Gatsby's one and only close friend. All the other so called "friends" were bought with extrodinary get togethers and tasty chardinay. So now that there host was gone there was no reason to show your initiall respect even at his passing. But a part of me is thinking maybe that all could have been avoided if Gatsby would have been to his parties and mingled with his guests. But i guess we'll never know.

  9. Not very many people attended Gatsbys final event, but his father did come. This shows that even though lots of people came to his parties in the past people didn't really like him, it was just about money. Money can't buy happiness. Gatsbys schedule as a child was very strict and full, he was determined to grow up and make something of himself, and he did, He just didn't get the one thing he really wanted.

  10. The only people who showed up to Gatsby's funeral were his own father, Nick, Owl eyes, postman, and some servants. This is significant because it shows that he really didn't have anyone that actually cared about him, only people that cared about partying. It really shows that Gatsby didn't let that many people into his life. He was a pretty friendly man he just never that all that open.

  11. His schedule as a kid was very strict! It really shows you how bad he actually wanted to be successful and actually tried his hardest to make it that way. I think the author is saying that if you want something you have to give it your best shot to make something of it so it can actually happen. Gatsby doesn't only do this with trying to be rich, he tries his hardest to get back together with Daisy, like when he gets out of his comfort zone and asks favors of Nick to help him out with getting the to of them in the same place at the same time.

  12. At Gatsby's funeral only Nick, Gatsby's father, and the owl-eyed man came other than a few servents of Gatsby. By looking at that he only had a few true friends and that a lot of poeple used him because of his money. Because he was poor when he was little and that he was sent to war he lost some of the friends he had or could have had. Why did Daisy not want to merry Gatsby just because he was poor? I believe that Fitsgerald was trying to creat a theme of struggle. Gatsby mostly started his life with nothing but then got rich when he got older. But even though he got the money he never got Daisy back in the end, so i think that he started and ended his life with nothing, and that shows a theme of struggle and sacrifice.

  13. Gatsby's own FATHER attended the final event at Gatsby's house. This is very significant because it says that Gatsby has a family still and they know about him and how his life goes. Another person who attended the final event a Gatsby's house is Owl Eyes. Owl Eyes is important because in the beginning when Owl Eyes is first introduced he is a drunk man that you would think was crazy, but he was actually one of Gatsby's friends. That proves that there is a lot about Gatsby that was never told.

Gatsby's schedule as a child was much like an adults because he planned it all out and he put down notes that he would follow. The theme I think that is being portrayed is tidiness Gatsby is tidy all throughout his life.

  14. I agree with Taylor, that the people at Gatsby's parties were not his friends, but just there for his money and parties. The only people at Gatsby's funeral that actually cared about Gatsby were his father and Nick, and the owl-eyed guy felt obliged to be there.

Gatsby's schedule as a child reflects that he was very methodical and organized, just like he is as an adult.

  15. Only a few people attended his funeral. This is significant as it re-iterates what I believe to be a major theme of the book; money cant get you everything. The amount of people that showed up to his funeral go's to show how little his money did in creating actual friendships. The theme of money not being able to get one everything falls under the biggest message of the novel; criticism of the epoch and its low morals.

  16. The people who attend his funeral are Owl Eyes? Gatsby's father; Henry, and Nick. This is significant because i think it shows who really cared/respected Gatsby. Also, it showed who was there for Gatsby, whether he be dead or alive.
The schedule of a young Gatsby compared to an older Gatsby doesnt change much, and it shows his organization and dedication to feeling successful.
I agree with Torin's comment above that his money didnt create a strong friendhsip with his party-goers.

  17. Henry Gatz, the postman, owl eyes, Nick, and some servants showed up at his funeral. This is significant because it shows who really cared for Gatsby and who didn't. You can tell this shows people only cared for him because of his wealth, and all of his parties they threw every weekend. Half the time Gatsby didn't even know the people that showed up. At the funeral, when Nick only seen very little people attend the funeral, he realized Gatsby really didn't have others there for him and felt bad. The theme to me would be that money doesn't get you what you want. Gatsby father showing up made Nick realize what Gatsbys childhood was like and why he was raised he was, and acts the way he did.

  18. I don't think the people that showed up to Gatsby's funeral cared about him, except Nick and Gatsby's father, Henry Gatz. "Owl Eyes" and the servants were merely remorseful. As for Wolfsheim, his virtue of showing people you care when they're alive is insightful. Fitzgerald probably put that in as a moral of the story, to care for people often for you don't know when they'll be gone.

Gatsby's routine as a child helped him get to where he was before his death. A lot of that probably had to do with Daisy; to be rich enough for Daisy to be with him.

  19. Nick, Gatsbys father, owl eyes, and a couple servants showed up to his last event. Though it may seem as Gatsby had many freinds because of his big parties everynight, nobody showed up except a few prople. That shows how Gatsby didnt have any real freinds, they were only people who were rich and wanted to party.

Gatsbys father showed Nick that book, that shows how dtermined Gatsby was to succeed and get as far as he is now, then he looses the love of his life, how ironique.

  20. Only three people were at Gatsby's funeral but only two were significant. Nick and Henry Gatz. This is important because it showed who were the real firends of Gatsby.
