Chapter 3

At the end of Chapter 3, Nick states "I am one of the few honest people I have ever known" (64). Do you hold the same opinion of Nick as he has of himself? Why or why not?

  1. I believe that Nick's statement is right. As he said in the beginning of the book a lot of people open up their secrets to him. So that provides a larger perpective of who the people around him really are. Tom isn't being honest with his wife by cheating on her with a women from the ash town. Myrtle is cheating on her husband with Tom. Jordan cheated in her golf tournament by moving the ball, which is slightly dishonest to the other competitors. daisy hasn't had the same amount of description or writing about as the other main characters, so she is ruled out. And for Mr. Gatsby, he isn't being a 100% honest I believe. He is hiding something from the party members. A lot of the members are trying to figure out who he truly is and why is throwing these big parties. He is concealing himself or isolating himself in the crowd of the party.

  2. I agree with Ricky. Most of Nick's friends (Mrs. Wilson, Tom, Jordan) are all lying to the people around them. Gatsby is also lying about something to all of the pary-goers. So Nick feels like he is one of the only honest people he knows.

  3. I don't really agree with Nick's comment because if he was so honest why doesn't he tell his cousin that her husband is having an affair? Or if she knows why wouldn't he try and convince her to leave him? Or at least stop hanging out with him all the time? And why wouldn't he argue with Jordan about how she left the top down on the car in the rain? Or when she moved the ball in the gold tournament? And I don't think we really know enough about Gatsby to say wether he is dishonest or not. We just knows he throws parties and he "doesn't want any trouble with anybody"(48) we are just going off of people's opinions about him right now like that he killed a man? We don't know these facts for sure. So sorry Ricky I don't agree ):

  4. I agree with what Colin said I think that nick is honest but his friends and those around them are dishonest. He seems dishonest because he is quiet and listen in on other people's conversations but he isn't because he doesn't tell others what he hears so he's not dishonest.

  5. I do not agree with Nick's arrogance. He seems too full of himself to not acknowledge any of his flaws. Everyone around him is described with a thousand flaws, yet Nick is not. Although he is honest with dialogue and descriptions, he is not honest with himself. That's all the honesty one would need. I would like to see The Great Gatsby from another perspective; from one who isn't ashamed of himself. The story would be drastically different, but I would prefer that over reading from the point of view of an arrogant man.

  6. Well you are right Collin can't justify that Gatsby is dishonest or not because we don't know him enough but from what we do know now is that he is hiding something from the members. He is hosting all of these parties for no particular reason. Why would he do that? and at these parties he isn't as involved as a usual party host should be. Which implies that he is hiding something from the people. What exactly is Gatsby hiding from the people? This to me shows that he is not being honest to the party members. Nick is honest compared the rest of the people because everyone is lying or cheating in some way wether it be a golf tournament or their spouse. So Nick compared to everyone is "one of the few honest people that I have ever known" (64)

  7. I think Nick is one of the more honest people in the book, because he hasn't done anything to deceive anyone yet. He also hold himself to a higher standard by not judging people. And as for what collin said, he probably doesn't tell daisy because its obvious that she already knows, also it says that she won't get divorced because she is catholic, which she isn't, so if she really didn't want to be married to him she wouldn't have made that lie.

  8. I somewhat agree with Nick's comment that he is one of the few honest people he has ever known. The reason I don't agree with this is because, of what Collin said earlier, if he was so honest he would tell his cousin Daisy that Tom is cheating on her. But then again I feel like Daisy knows Tom is cheating on her, but just doesn't want to come to terms with it. I feel like Nick just doesn't want to cause trouble between people and be that sort of "tattle-tale." He is a kind of laid low and laid back character, which even though he doesn't seem honest because of the whole Daisy/Tom thing, I think he knows well and is a very well honest person towards himself.

  9. I think Nick is the honest person in the book he dosn't really lie to anyone he just states how he feels he is more like a person that is just i say everything i am feeling if i am asked for it other than that i will keep to myself kind of person everyone else more keeps a marriage lie or other kind of lie in them.

  10. I think Nick is a very honest person, he might keep secrets like the whole Tom thing, but he is very open about how he feels about everything. All the other characters we have met seem to be hiding something.

  11. The statement about himself being honest is very much true. He is that one person you can go to that can keep a secret but can always tell the truth. He is humble, smart, thoughtful.

  12. I totally agree with Jerrico that Nick is an honest person. Nick does not lie to people, and Nick is very outgoing and he is truthful with people. Nick is in a very hard place right now, i like wafflez, and that he is not doing so well.

    1. What is so difficult for Nick right now? Please explain further.

    2. The thing that is so difficult for nick right now is that he has to deal with other people not being honest, other people not telling the truth and he believes them. Nick is way to honest to himself and others then other people are honest to him.

    3. Do they choose to be dishonest to themselves?

  13. When he comments about his honesty, I disagree with what he says because if he was so honest he would have told his second cousin twice removed that her husband was having an affair with Mrs. Wilson if he was so honest why haven't he said anything?

  14. I do not agree with what Nick thinks of himself. When he says that "I am the most honest person I know" by him saying this it makes me think like what Amanda said that he isn't thank full for all the stuff he has and that he doesn't think he has any flaws when he really does. Nick should be grateful for how much stuff he can have because not many people had the chance to even see such elegant things like he got to. Does Mr.Wilson know that his wife Daisy is having an affair?

  15. Well i think Nick truely is one of the only honest people in the story. Everyone else in the story lies about being faithful. Tom lies to daisy and is unfaithful because of his misstress in New York, Mrs. Wilson. People at Gatsby's party's spread untrue rumors about Gatsby, and the only one in the story that stays honest and doesn't spread terrible rumors is Nick.

  16. My opinion is that Nick most likely is telling the truth. I only think this because the kind of personality he has shown so far into the book. otherwise we really don't know much about him do to the fact that he is a listener and doesn't much talk himself. He is more of a thinker if anything I think. I think really the only thing that could be considered lying for Nick is that he has been drinking alcohol which was illegal back then so that means he was breaking the law.

    1. I agree, at this point in the book he appears to be an honest, un-biased, gentleman. I believe he is made to seem almost too perfect, in contrast to the snobbish alcoholic wealthly people that frequent gatsbys partys. Maybe this is showing his distaste for rich people? Making nick seem so nice and honest to make them look bad?

  17. Nick's opinion is that he is an honest man, i hold this to be true since it seems as though he has not done one dishonest thing in the novel yet. Everyone else in the novel seems to have lied or cheated about one thing or another. I agree that Nick is an honest man.

  18. On the other hand Nick is surrounded by all these people how are lying and cheating. Just like Ricky said, Jordan cheated in her gold tournament and most every couple is cheating on one another. I consider Nick not telling or "tattling" on everyone is making him not completely honest. I wouldn't go as far as to saying that he is lying but he is at least not telling the complete truth. I think Nick would be a lot better off if he were surrounded by a better group of people and not being forced in a way to lie or not tell the complete truth.

  19. In a way, what is Nick lying about? At the end of Chapter 3 do you think he was sincere when he said "I'm the only honest person I've ever known" ? Or, was he feeling a bit guilty about something himself?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think that he was being sincere for the most part but that he was feeling a little guilty because he hasn't told Tom or Daisy that they are cheating on one another. He is really good friends with both of them and so he feels guilty he hasn't told them. That is the main reason that Nick would be feeling guilty because throughout the book so far he has been honest other than that.

  21. ^^I never thought of it that way actually, i think he might feel guilty for leaving the girl he had to be with Jordan. but I'm sure anyone could take any small part out of the book and make it seem like something it's not. That would make sense though, and I do believe it. I'm sure that he wasn't sincere when he said "I'm the only honest person I've ever known."

  22. I believe Nick is an honest man, he hasn't done any dishonest thing in the story so far. Unlike Tom or Daisy, who are having other relationships behind each others back. Nick feels kind of sorry for Daisy and Tom for not liking their marriage, but guilty at the same time for not telling them their cheating on each other. Nick is a quiet guy, when he attends Gatsby's party, he makes the rich dishonest people look bad because he is true.

  23. I believe that Nick holds himself to be one of the few, most honest people that he has ever met mainly because what he does is the truth in his eyes. The people around him are constantly lying to one another instead of coming right out with the truth, while mostly thats all Nick speaks of. Is Nick 100% honest all of the time? No, im sure of that. But for the most part, the actions Nick takes are seen as being truthful in his own eyes, and i think thats why Nick says he's one of the most honest people he has ever met.

  24. I think that Nick is a pretty honest person. He hasnt really done anything that could be called dishonest. Everyone else around him is lying and cheating but nick remains honest.

  25. I do believe that Nick us honest. He hasn't done anything yet in the book to make me think he is dishonest. And he says people are always telling him secrets and he holds onto those secrets and doesn't go tell them to people.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I somewhat feel like Nick is telling the truth about his statement. But like Mrs. Campbell said "was he feeling a bit guilty about something himself" I think he is because he is hiding stuff from everyone and you have to feel guilty about that. And also I agree with Ricky when he said in the beginning of the book he said people open their secrets to him, so other people must trust him.

  27. I believe that Nick is a very honest narrator. He usually keeps his thoughts to himself and just tells the events the way he sees them happening. This is why he feels guilty at the end of chapter three, he just finished partying with Tom and Myrtle who are having an affair and he hasn't said anything to Daisy. While its not his place to tell them, Daisy is his cousin and he feels guilty about keeping this detail to himself.

  28. i feel that nick is one of the few honest people in this story but also i agree with Andrew he does seem to be hiding something or have a secret to tell some kind of burden to bare. but i still feel that he is the honest person that he sees himself. It didn't seem like it at first because he seemed like such a ignorant human being but now later on in the story his actual self came out.

  29. I feel that Nick is a very honest person, aside from not telling Daisy about the affair. He is always the person people go to when they need to talk or have secrets knowing they can trust him and give them his honest opinion on what they should do. Like I said in my comments for chapter 1 & 2, I believe he doesn't tell them about the affair because they obviously have a clue on whats going on. Like Jordan said, "I thought everyone knew". And tells Nick about how Tom has a girl in New York. Also, when they are sitting down at dinner Tom gets a phone call and Jordan says "you'd think she'd have the decency not to call during dinner".

  30. I agree with Jordan and Collin. Nick so far seems like a very honest man and he has his own thoughts and opinions about the people he meets and knows. Nick knows that Jordan Baker and Tom and Gatsby all have their flaws but he really doesn't have the right to try to change or correct their flaws. Nick has his ideas and reasoning's about why Jordan Baker has innocent lies or why Tom is cheating on his cousin and why Gatsby has his little lies and stories said about him hes just really hiding behind all the lies. Tom cheats on Daisy because he is unhappy and finds more adventure with his Mistress in New York. And Jordan lies because she believes that she needs to be seen as a perfect person and when she isn't perfect she will tell a little lie to cover it all up. And Nick isn't exactly implying that hes the only honest person he knows hes just saying that he hasn't really lied about anything and so far he is an honest man. But we don't know yet if hes hiding something or not. so, so far he is an honest man and trying to stay out of drama. Because who really wants to be the one to go tell your cousin that her husband is cheating on her when she basically already knows and you wouldn't really want to be known as that person who could cause more problems by bringing up other peoples lies. No body is perfect.

  31. I think Nick is a very honest person. He wouldn't say that he is "one of the few honest people I have ever known" if he wasn't honest. Nevertheless he could just be very conceited and stuck up. To say that about everyone is simply ignorant.
